There are many disadvantages to single parenting. Even after you weight the single parenting pros and cons you will see that the disadvantages of single parenting usually outweigh the advantages.
The biggest concerns about single parenting are the children. Does a single parent have the resources and capacity to handle raising a child alone while balancing work? This is a great concern for many.
Except in the most unusual circumstances a single parent must work. That immediately requires that some form of care be provided for the children who are at home.
This care may be supplied by public or private school if the children are school age but what about younger children? Preschool can be expensive and many single parents have more than 1 child.
Sometimes a grandparent or other relative can watch the younger children. We know this to be a fact as 5.6 million children in the US live with their grandparents. These facts are based on 2000 US census data.
If a grandparent is not around to help; then what? You must make some form of arrangement to have care provided for your preschool children or you must find a way to work from home. This situation is one of the biggest disadvantages of single parenting.
Another big disadvantage is time. I know about this because I was a single parent for several years. Working full time and raising a child is going to put massive strains on the amount of time you have to do anything.
A typical day goes like this; you hurry to get yourself and your child out the door and to the early drop off at the school by 7am. You travel about half an hour to work, providing you do not get stuck in rush hour traffic.
You put in a full day at work and leave around 5pm, picking up your child between 5:30 and 6pm. You arrive home after 6 and then you have to make dinner and deal with homework.
Hopefully, you are not in a job that requires you to bring work home. By the time you finish dinner and homework it could be time to get ready for be if the child is in elementary school or younger.
After a bath or shower, reading a story together, it's bedtime. This is how it goes every weekday. Then the school holidays must be dealt with as other arrangements must be made.
No wonder so many single parents get burned out. It can be exhausting! This is one of the big disadvantages of single parenting.
If you weigh the pro and cons of single parenting you will find that time management and quality time with your child or children are important issues to resolve.
Without a good plan in place you will realize why these two items are the biggest disadvantages of single parenting. Before you decide on this, make sure you have a support network in place.
It is what will be best for you and your children.
