Single Dad Parenting & Support
Where can you turn for advice on single dad parenting? This is a hard topic. There are many single dads out there. The problems faced by a single dad are sometimes more difficult than those of the single mother.
For example, nobody bats an eye if a single mother is a stay at home mother and does not work or if they only work part-time. On the other hand a stay at home dad is often thought of as a dead beat because society feels that they should be out in the work force.
A dad who only works part-time is somehow viewed in a negative light although a single mom working part-time is considered a hero to many. So how are the needs of a single parent dad met: through very specific organizations.
One of my favorite single parent organizations is Parents Without Partners. Their website is parentswithoutpartners.org. This organization helps all single parents, moms and dads alike.
Many times single dads are dealing with the loss of a spouse or partner due to death and they now have the responsibility of providing for a young child and working full time.
Throughout history this has been the plight of the single dad. He is expected to work full time and supply proper care for his child.
If the child is younger than 13 this can be a problem as some form of daycare or after school activities must be arranged in order for him to work. Furthermore, unless he is a teacher at a local school, arrangements must be made for the children on school holidays.
Maybe there are relatives to help, but most often single dads are out there providing for all and doing it alone. What about a single dad with teenagers? This is definitely a challenge as teenagers actually require more supervision than younger children.
The reason for this is that they have fewer opportunities for supervised activities afterschool and they can get into a lot more trouble, very serious trouble, if proper adult guidance is not available.
What about if a single dad with a teenage boy needs support in parenting? One of the best ways to get this kind of support is through a single parenting group like Parents Without Partners or Gingerbread.
You can also contact the Big Brothers of America and see if there are mentors available to help with your teenage son when you cannot be there. Teenage boys are a special set of individuals and they need as many positive male role models as they can get.
Many times they feel rejected and alone because their dad has to work and cannot be there like a stay at home mom can. While dad can get help through many agencies with advice on parenting, three are fewer options for the teenage boys of single dads.
That's where organizations like Big Brothers Big
Sisters comes in. They can help provide the mentoring and friendship
that can be lacking in teenager – single dad
relationships.
Single dad parenting is not an easy situation. Single dads have more pressure on them to work full time and to provide care for their children. It is important that they have the support network they need.
