Many women who are raising a child or children by themselves feel that they are rare and no one truly knows how they feel. In 2004, only 36% of births were from unmarried women. Also, only 18% of single fathers were never wed! This completely contradicts the general view on this matter! So, in opposition to the common belief, the majority of single mothers do not rely on welfare for financial stability.

In fact, 79% of single mothers have a job that helps to support their family. 50% of single mothers are employed at a full time occupation. This helps to prove that single moms are hardworking women who dedicate their time to supporting their family.

Another common misconception when it comes to single mothers statistics is that the stats should reflect young women as the majority of single parents. When polled, many women who were single mothers were not in their twenties or even their thirties! In fact, 37.7% of single mothers were 40 years or older. Another interesting statistic about single parenting shows that single fathers are not as uncommon as many would think. The number of single fathers spiked in 1998 by 25% ( equaling 2.1 million single dads) Shocked by these single mother statistics? So were many others!

On the Negative Side

Although there are many positive single mothers statistics, there also comes the bad. Children from a home without a father are 6.6 times more likely than that of a nuclear family to become a teenage mother and 24.3 times more likely to run away from home. Children reared in a fatherless home are also 6.6 times more likely to drop out of school.

When reviewing statistics, remember that you are not necessarily one of those numbers. Just because the stats are high, this is not an indication that you or your child/ or children, will end up the same way.
